West Milford NJ real estate:
West Milford, an 80-plus square mile municipality, sits
entirely in the Highlands." Its beautiful mountainous terrain,
dotted with approximately forty lakes, is crisscrossed by roads that
run along its scenic valleys and ridges.
Most of its 10,000 homes surround its lakes. Many of
these homes, once summer resort bungalows, have over the years been
enlarged and converted into year-round residences. And over the past
twenty years, many newer, larger homes on one- to four-acre lots,
as well as two major condominium developments, have been built. With
this development history, prospective homeowners can find a range
of housing types and costs to suit their particular needs.
State highway, Route 23, winds along its southern boundary,
more or less paralleling the Pequannock River, provides its main transportation
links to the outside world. About an hour northwest of NYC.
Park and rides offer bus transit to NYC for commuters. Many residents
work in NYC, and all enjoy the proximity for cultural and sporting
events in the NY/NJ metro area. Area pro teams are the Yankees, Mets,
Giants and Jets. Several minor league teams also play in the general
area.
A community committed to youth activities, West Milford
boasts perhaps the most popular teen center coffee house in New Jersey.
Recreation programs are available for people of all ages. All family
members can enjoy a wide variety of recreational, fun, and educational
programs, sponsored not only by the Township's Recreation Department,
but also its schools, the Police Athletic League, and local churches
and civic groups. Greenwood Lake is a 9 mile long BI-state lake with
it's southern end located in West Milford.
Enjoy sailing, fishing and motorboat activities, along with several
eateries with lakeside patios and dining.
In nearby Vernon, you can enjoy skiing in the winter, and a water
park in the summer months. Veron Valley and Great Gorge offer skiing
while Mountain Creek offers a fun filled day of water park activities.
Only 20 mins away with no traffic to worry about. Farm stands along
the way offer fresh produce, apple picking, and hayrides.
Recreational sports, hiking, boating, and fishing, attract some hardy
tourists, but West Milford's main attraction for local residents is
its vast extent of largely undeveloped and state protected forests,
nearly 2/3 of the entire municipality.
West Milford has six elementary schools (grades K-6),
one middle school (grade 7-8), and one high school (grades 9-12).
Further, the West Milford Township School District supports a Center
for Adult/Community Education.
A section of Bearfort Ridge reaches into Hewitt State Forest, offering
hikers a challenging climb with a rewarding view. The forest is isolated
and untouched, accessible only on foot. Marshes and wetlands are scattered
throughout the forest with several brooks and streams crisscrossing
the lower areas. Hemlock and oak are the dominant species of this
relatively undisturbed forest.
Rocky outcrops and upland swamps characterize Abram S. Hewitt State
Forest. Upon entering the forest, the Appalachian Trail ascends to
Bearfort Ridge. The glacially carved ridge offers spectacular views
eastward along Greenwood Lake. Bearfort Mountain is the eastern terminus
of the Wawayanda Plateau. At this point, the Appalachian Trail leaves
New Jersey and enters New York.
The quiet charm of Wawayanda appeals to hikers, campers, swimmers
and boaters. Forested hills surround Lake Wawayanda creating a restful
backdrop for canoeists, boaters and fisherman, while steep mountains
challenge casual as well as serious hikers. A twenty-mile stretch
of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park, while the top of Wawayanda
Mountain offers sensational views. More than forty miles of trails
are marked in the park.
The topography of this ravine is one of high relief with 300-foot
increases in elevation from Doublekill Creek to surrounding hills.
The hemlock-mixed hardwood forest provides a cool shady break for
hikers on the Appalachian Trail, which is located along the western
boundary of the natural area.
This natural area features an Atlantic white cedar swamp,
mixed oak-hardwood forest and a glacially formed spring-fed lake and
is habitat for the red-shouldered hawk, barred owl and great blue
heron. Visitors may choose from several trails, including a scenic
walk around Laurel Pond.
